Inquiry launched into delays in extraditing alleged drug lord from Japan

A special investigation has been initiated to identify officials allegedly responsible for deliberately delaying the submission of documents required to secure Japanese cooperation in the arrest and extradition of Pothupitiya Kankanamge Prashith Dinuka, alias 'Dippitigoda Lahiru', a 31-year-old alleged organised crime figure and drug trafficker. The suspect, who previously operated from Dubai, relocated to Japan while evading Sri Lankan authorities.
The investigation comes amid concerns that institutional delays may have hindered efforts to bring the fugitive to justice. Lahiru is believed to have been involved in significant drug trafficking operations across multiple jurisdictions, leveraging his international network to conduct illicit activities.
The inquiry seeks to determine whether any official misconduct or negligence contributed to postponing the submission of extradition documents to Japanese authorities. Such delays can complicate international law enforcement cooperation and potentially allow suspects additional time to evade capture or move between jurisdictions.
The development reflects growing scrutiny of Sri Lanka's extradition procedures and the handling of high-profile criminal cases involving suspects abroad. Authorities have intensified efforts in recent years to pursue organised crime figures and major drug traffickers operating internationally, with mixed success in securing timely cooperation from foreign governments.
