Insects and spiders crucial to ecosystem health, experts tell Dharwad

Scientists gathered in Dharwad have emphasized the often-overlooked importance of insects and spiders in maintaining healthy ecosystems, calling for greater recognition of these invertebrates' ecological significance.

Eshaan Pahade, an entomologist and founder-director of the Entomon Institute of Invertebrate Zoology in Pune, highlighted during the lecture series that systematic surveys and scientific studies of insects and spiders represent an underutilized opportunity for generating crucial biodiversity information.

Pahade argued that community-based documentation initiatives involving local populations could transform insect and spider surveys into valuable long-term resources for understanding ecosystem dynamics. Such participatory approaches would distribute the workload of data collection while building awareness of invertebrate biodiversity at the grassroots level.

The intervention comes at a time when invertebrate populations face mounting pressures from habitat loss and environmental degradation across India. Experts contend that better baseline data on insect and spider populations is essential for informed conservation decision-making and environmental management strategies.
