Interior Secretary Denies Claims Romualdez Has Special Jail Access

MANILA — Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Thursday flatly rejected suggestions that Leyte Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez receives special privileges at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas, where the lawmaker is being held on a plunder charge.

Remulla described the allegation, which originated from a retired columnist, as unfounded gossip. The Interior Secretary indicated he would provide further clarification to address the matter, though details of his planned response were not immediately disclosed.

Romualdez, a member of the influential political family, was arrested and detained following charges related to allegedly misappropriated funds. The detention facility in Payatas has housed numerous high-profile detainees over the years.

The denial comes as questions about jail conditions and prisoner treatment remain subject to public scrutiny. Prison officials have previously implemented measures aimed at ensuring equal treatment of inmates regardless of social status or political connections.
