Internet poses serious profiling risks, warns former Odisha HC judge

Former Chief Justice of the Odisha High Court S. Muralidhar has raised alarm over the vulnerability of citizens to profiling and surveillance through internet platforms and artificial intelligence systems. Speaking on the issue, Muralidhar emphasized the critical need for protective measures as digital technologies become increasingly integrated into everyday life.

The former judge highlighted how internet infrastructure and AI-driven systems create pathways for unauthorized tracking and data collection of individuals, often without adequate transparency or consent mechanisms. He pointed out that citizens remain largely unaware of the extent to which their digital footprints are being monitored and analyzed by various entities.

Muralidhar called for proactive intervention by human rights institutions and regulatory bodies to address the mounting risks posed by these technologies. He stressed the importance of establishing robust legal frameworks and oversight mechanisms to protect citizens' fundamental rights to privacy and freedom from surveillance.

The remarks come amid growing concerns across India and the region about data privacy, digital surveillance, and the unchecked use of artificial intelligence in profiling citizens. Human rights advocates have similarly flagged the need for stronger safeguards and institutional accountability in the digital space to prevent misuse of personal information.
