Internet connectivity was temporarily severed at nine locations across Delhi on Saturday afternoon as authorities sought to maintain order during demonstrations linked to the Chief Justice of India. The suspension of mobile internet services came into effect from noon and remained in place until 10 pm, impacting a significant portion of the capital's digital communications. The decision was sanctioned by Union home secretary Govind Mohan, indicating the high-level coordination between central government agencies in response to the situation. Among the affected areas was Jantar Mantar, a prominent gathering spot for protests in central Delhi, along with eight other unspecified locations across the city. Each restricted zone encompassed a 500-metre perimeter around designated points. Such internet shutdowns, though temporary and geographically limited, have become a familiar tool deployed by authorities to prevent the rapid spread of inflammatory content and coordination of large gatherings during sensitive public demonstrations in India's major cities.
