Red mangroves, introduced to Hawaii over 124 years ago, have transformed from a seemingly beneficial addition to the islands' landscape into a significant ecological threat. The trees have proliferated across Hawaiian waterways, creating dense stands that are fundamentally altering the natural ecosystem that native waterbirds depend upon for survival.

The invasion has had cascading effects on waterbird populations that evolved in Hawaii's unique coastal environments. Native species that historically thrived in open water areas and marshlands now face habitat loss as mangrove forests expand into traditional feeding and nesting grounds. Researchers have documented declining populations of several indigenous waterbird species directly linked to mangrove encroachment.

Beyond birdlife, the mangrove expansion has restructured Hawaiian waterways themselves.
