Investment manager loses RM1.2 million in scam impersonation case

The victim, an investment manager, was targeted by scammers who posed as officials and convinced her that she was implicated in a money laundering case, prompting her to liquidate personal assets to cover purported legal expenses and fines.

Fearing legal consequences, the woman pledged and sold nearly RM500,000 worth of jewellery as part of the scheme. She subsequently transferred over RM1.2 million to various bank accounts controlled by the fraudsters, believing the payments were necessary to resolve the alleged criminal matter.

The scam capitalised on common tactics used by organised fraud rings operating across the region, where impersonators contact victims and create a false sense of urgency and legal jeopardy to extract funds. The victim only realised she had been defrauded after the money had been transferred and contact with the scammers ceased.

Authorities are investigating the case as part of ongoing efforts to combat financial fraud and money laundering-related scams that continue to target professionals and high-income earners in Malaysia. Police have advised the public to verify official communications directly with relevant agencies rather than responding to unsolicited calls claiming to involve criminal investigations.
