IOA election code restricts personal criticism of candidates

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has unveiled a comprehensive Code of Conduct governing its forthcoming electoral process, which includes provisions restricting criticism pertaining to the personal or private affairs of candidates standing for election.

The two-phase election schedule will see 10 members of the Athletes' Commission elected on November 3, followed by voting for eight State Olympic Medals (SOMs) representatives on November 9. The conduct guidelines, designed to maintain electoral integrity, establish parameters for acceptable campaign discourse during the nomination and voting periods.

The restrictions on personal criticism represent an effort by the IOA to ensure a focused campaign environment centered on candidates' qualifications and vision for Indian sport. Officials have emphasized that the code aims to preserve the dignity of the electoral process while preventing potentially damaging attacks unrelated to professional competency.

These procedural guidelines reflect broader governance reforms within the IOA, which has faced scrutiny regarding its administrative practices in recent years. The conduct code is expected to be enforced consistently across all eligible voters participating in the November elections.

The Athletes' Commission and SOMs positions are key bodies within the IOA's decision-making structure, with representatives responsible for advocating athlete interests and managing state-level sporting medals programs respectively.
