Regen Fiber has commissioned a wind turbine blade recycling facility in Fairfax, Iowa, addressing a growing waste challenge in the renewable energy sector. The plant employs an all-mechanical shredding process that avoids the use of heat and chemical treatments, converting old turbine blades into usable additives for construction materials.
The facility is designed to process more than 30,000 tonnes of blade waste annually, transforming them into fibres and powders that can be incorporated into concrete, mortar and asphalt applications. This approach aims to extend the lifecycle of composite materials from decommissioned turbines rather than directing them to landfills.
The initiative comes as the wind energy industry grapples with managing blades that are increasingly reaching the end of their operational lifespan.
