Iran claims downing of U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone over Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed Wednesday it destroyed an American MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle using a missile strike over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The incident marks the latest escalation in aerial operations over the contested waterway.

The IRGC announced the successful interception of the reconnaissance drone, asserting that its air defense capabilities have been substantially reinforced. The strike, if confirmed, would represent another loss for the U.S. military in operations over the Persian Gulf corridor.
According to Washington Post reporting, American forces have lost 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones since February, with replacement and operational costs exceeding $1.3 billion. The high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft have become central to U.S. surveillance and strike missions across the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, with roughly one-third of seaborne traded oil passing through its narrow waters. Drone activity over the region has intensified amid broader regional tensions, with both American and Iranian forces conducting regular surveillance operations in the area.
Iranian officials have repeatedly claimed improvements to their air defense systems in recent months. The claimed downing of the Reaper would be consistent with previous Iranian assertions of enhanced defense capabilities, though independent verification of such claims remains difficult.
