Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for explosions and fires aboard four petroleum tankers in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, marking a significant escalation in regional maritime tensions.
The Guards stated they also successfully neutralized a US military drone and an unmanned naval vessel operating in the strategically critical waterway, through which approximately one-third of the world's seaborne traded oil passes.
The claims, which have not been independently verified, come amid heightened US-Iran tensions over regional security issues and nuclear negotiations. The Strait of Hormuz has repeatedly become a flashpoint for confrontations between Iranian and American military assets in recent years.
The incident adds to a series of maritime incidents in the Persian Gulf region that have raised international concerns about freedom of navigation and the safety of commercial shipping routes vital to global energy supplies. Regional observers have expressed worry about potential further escalation in the increasingly volatile waters.
Official responses from American and international authorities to Iran's claims were not immediately available.
