Iranian authorities carried out the execution of Shahbakhsh, who was convicted of involvement in armed assaults targeting police installations in Sistan-Baluchestan province, the country's restive southeastern region bordering Pakistan. Several police personnel were killed or wounded in the attacks attributed to the group.
Jaish al-Adl, the organization Shahbakhsh was affiliated with, has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on Iranian security forces over the past decade. The group operates primarily in border regions and has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Iranian government.
The execution marks the latest action by Tehran against militants accused of destabilizing operations in Sistan-Baluchestan, an ethnically Baloch region where separatist movements have periodically challenged state authority. Baloch separatist groups have staged numerous attacks against military and police targets in recent years, prompting strong security responses from Iranian authorities.
Iran regularly executes individuals convicted of terrorism-related charges, though international human rights organizations have raised concerns about due process and transparency in such trials.
