Iran offers swift reopening of Strait of Hormuz if US meets demands

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has restated Tehran's standing offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world's most vital shipping corridors—within seven days, provided the United States meets specific preconditions. The proposal, according to Iranian officials, remains active as Tehran evaluates the American response to its terms for de-escalation.

Iran's conditions for ending the conflict center on the lifting of economic sanctions and cessation of what Tehran characterizes as regional aggression. These demands reflect longstanding grievances between Tehran and Washington over sanctions imposed under successive US administrations, as well as broader regional security concerns.

The development coincides with optimistic statements from US President Donald Trump regarding the potential for rapid resolution of hostilities and anticipated benefits including lower global energy prices. However, the two nations remain far apart on core issues, with Iran insisting on sanctions relief as a prerequisite for normalization.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global crude oil passes annually, remains strategically critical to international energy security and regional commerce. Any sustained closure or disruption would have significant implications for oil markets and economies across South and Southeast Asia dependent on stable energy supplies.
