Iran pledges response as US tightens sanctions regime

Iran has vowed to retaliate after Washington expanded its sanctions architecture, adding pressure to the Islamic Republic's economy through restrictions on entities and individuals involved in activities deemed threatening to American interests.

The US Treasury Department unveiled sanctions against 60 targets, including individuals, corporate entities and maritime vessels, as part of its ongoing campaign to isolate Iran economically. The action underscores the Biden administration's commitment to enforcing existing restrictions on Iran's financial and commercial activities.

However, the sanctions list conspicuously avoided naming Chinese financial institutions that American officials have linked to facilitating Iran's crude oil exports. The omission reflects sensitivities in US-China relations and suggests diplomatic considerations in Washington's approach to penalizing third-country support for Iranian commerce.

Tehran's leadership has characterised successive rounds of American sanctions as unlawful economic warfare and has repeatedly pledged to respond proportionally. Iranian officials view the measures as part of a broader US strategy to destabilise the country and diminish its regional influence.

The escalating sanctions regime complicates prospects for diplomatic engagement on the nuclear question and reflects deepening tensions between Washington and Tehran across multiple policy domains.
