Iran proposes reopening of Hormuz Strait within week, says foreign minister

Iran has presented a new proposal to the United States aimed at resolving tensions over the Hormuz Strait, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints through which a significant portion of global oil trade passes. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the initiative could facilitate the reopening of the waterway within a week if accepted.

Araghchi stated that the proposal has been formally transmitted to Washington via Qatar, which has been serving as a diplomatic intermediary in the negotiations. The move represents an attempt by Tehran to break the current deadlock and reduce regional tensions.

The Hormuz Strait, located between Iran and Oman, connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any disruption to shipping through the 21-mile-wide passage has significant implications for global energy markets and international trade.

According to Araghchi, the ball is now in America's court, with the United States holding the decision on whether to accept or reject the Iranian proposal.
