Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has unveiled an ambitious proposal to establish a $10 billion reinsurance company within the BRICS framework, seeking to deepen financial integration among the emerging market bloc. The initiative was presented as part of broader efforts to enhance economic cooperation and reduce reliance on traditional Western financial structures.
The proposed reinsurance firm would serve to pool risk and provide financial security for major infrastructure projects undertaken by BRICS member states. Such an arrangement could potentially lower borrowing costs and encourage investment in critical development initiatives across the bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Pezeshkian also advocated for increased use of local currencies in trade transactions among BRICS nations, a move designed to reduce dependence on the US dollar in inter-member commerce. This proposal aligns with broader BRICS efforts to create alternative financial mechanisms and strengthen regional economic ties independent of Western-dominated international finance systems.
The Iranian leader further called upon the BRICS Bank to expand its infrastructure financing capabilities, positioning the institution as a key vehicle for funding development projects across member nations. The push comes as BRICS seeks to consolidate its influence in global economic governance and provide viable alternatives to traditional multilateral lending institutions.
