Iran rebuffs US talks as vessel catches fire off Iraq coast

Iran's government said Wednesday that the United States is not genuinely committed to resolving disputes through dialogue, marking a significant setback to efforts aimed at de-escalating hostilities between the two nations.

The statement from Iranian officials came as the UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported a commercial vessel on fire off the Iraqi coast, adding to security concerns in one of the world's most critical shipping corridors.

The incidents underscore deteriorating relations and heightened risks to regional stability. Shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters have faced repeated incidents in recent months, with multiple vessels targeted or damaged amid broader geopolitical tensions.

It remains unclear whether the maritime incident was connected to ongoing hostilities. International maritime authorities are investigating the cause of the fire as salvage operations continue.

The breakdown in diplomatic momentum comes as international observers warn of escalating risks to commercial shipping and regional peace efforts.
