Iran's Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad disclosed on state television that new gas reserves totalling over 200 billion cubic metres have been found in the south of Fars province, a region in southwestern Iran with significant energy deposits.
The announcement comes as Iran seeks to maximize its hydrocarbon extraction and export potential amid ongoing international sanctions that have constrained its oil and gas revenues. Natural gas exploration and production remain core components of Iran's energy strategy and economic planning.
Fars province has long been a focal point for Iran's petroleum industry, with multiple existing oil and gas fields contributing substantially to national output. The discovery adds to Iran's proven natural gas reserves, which are among the world's largest.
Iran has consistently invested in exploration activities across its territory to identify new reserves and maintain production levels from aging fields. The government views such discoveries as critical to sustaining revenues and meeting domestic energy demands as the country's population continues to grow.
