Iran reports multiple vessel incidents in strategic Strait of Hormuz
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy said four oil tankers were struck in the Strait of Hormuz after traversing an unauthorised shipping route, while three additional vessels hit mines in the waterway on Wednesday night.

Tehran claimed the four ships had disregarded warnings and crossed what it described as an 'illegal route' through the strategic chokepoint, according to a statement from the IRGC Navy. The incidents occurred in the western section of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime passages, through which roughly one-third of global seaborne oil trade flows.
The IRGC Navy attributed three separate vessel strikes to mines in the same area during the same timeframe. The incidents raise fresh concerns about maritime security in the Persian Gulf region, where geopolitical tensions have periodically disrupted shipping lanes.
The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Iran and Oman, remains a focal point of international shipping traffic. Incidents involving commercial vessels in the waterway have historically triggered regional security alerts and international concern over freedom of navigation.
Details regarding the extent of damage to the vessels, their cargo, and any casualties were not immediately available. The incidents underscore ongoing maritime tensions in the Gulf, where Iran has previously contested shipping routes and warned vessels against what it considers unauthorised passage through its waters.
