The consolidation represents a setback to earlier US expectations of internal divisions that might facilitate political change within the Islamic Republic.
The Iranian leadership has made clear its scepticism towards any negotiated settlement, particularly following two separate incidents in which talks were interrupted by military strikes. Officials have indicated preparedness for a prolonged standoff with the United States and have warned of severe consequences should American military action resume.
