Iran has signalled a willingness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping traffic, contingent upon the United States meeting specific conditions related to military de-escalation and economic sanctions. Officials in Tehran indicated that restoring normal passage through the waterway, one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, could occur within seven days if American demands are addressed.
The overture comes as tensions between the two nations have impacted global energy markets and international commerce. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil passes, has remained a flashpoint in broader geopolitical disputes between Iran and the United States.
Under the proposed framework, the US would be required to withdraw military assets applying pressure on Iran and lift its economic blockade restricting Iranian port access. These measures form part of Washington's broader sanctions regime against Tehran, which has been in place for several years.
