Iranian cargo vessel struck in Hormuz Strait amid regional tensions

Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that the vessel was struck early Sunday morning near Qeshm Island, approximately 22 kilometres from the port city of Bandar Abbas. The Qeshm governor attributed the attack to a "terrorist enemy" but provided no further details. The incident marks an escalation in security concerns affecting one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.

The attack coincided with heightened regional tensions following reports last week that Iran-backed Houthi rebels had captured an island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in the Red Sea, further threatening shipping routes in the area. Qeshm Island holds strategic importance for Iran's assertion of control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of global crude oil passes daily.
