IRCTC Sales Rebound to 2020 Levels, But Profitability Under Pressure
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has recovered its pre-pandemic sales volumes with a 46% revenue increase, yet faces margin compression as low-margin catering operations expand and costs outpace earnings.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has returned to 2020 sales levels, marking a significant recovery in its core operations. The state-owned enterprise reported a 46% jump in revenue as travel demand rebounded and services resumed normalcy following the pandemic disruption.
However, the revenue recovery masks underlying profitability challenges. Operating margins have contracted sharply, sliding from 46.8% in FY22 to 32.2%, a decline that reflects structural shifts in IRCTC's business composition. The catering division, typically characterised by lower profit margins, has grown to outweigh traditional ticketing and tourism revenues, diluting overall profitability.
Cost pressures compound the margin squeeze. IRCTC's expense growth has consistently outpaced revenue expansion, driven by higher input costs, labour expenses, and operational overheads. These rising costs have prevented the company from converting higher sales into proportional profit gains.
The transition towards higher-volume, lower-margin catering business represents a strategic shift for IRCTC as it capitalises on increased rail travel. While the volume recovery demonstrates operational resilience, stakeholders are watching whether the company can stabilise margins through operational efficiency improvements or service premiumisation in the coming quarters.
