IRDAI unveils new four-tier motor insurance framework effective December 15

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has unveiled a restructured motor insurance framework set to take effect from December 15, marking a significant shift in how vehicle coverage is organized and sold to customers across the country.

The new four-layer structure divides motor insurance into distinct coverage components: third-party liability protection, passenger cover, personal accident coverage for the policyholder, and protection against damage to the insured vehicle itself. This modular approach is designed to provide policyholders with greater transparency regarding what each component covers and allow for more flexible policy customization.

Third-party liability remains a mandatory component under Indian motor insurance law, protecting the policyholder against claims arising from injury or damage caused to third parties. The passenger cover layer extends protection to individuals traveling in the vehicle, while personal accident coverage safeguards the vehicle owner against bodily injury or death. The fourth layer—own-damage protection—covers repair or replacement costs for the insured vehicle resulting from accidents, theft, or natural disasters.

The regulatory restructuring is intended to simplify the motor insurance landscape and enhance consumer understanding of coverage options. Industry observers anticipate the framework will facilitate more streamlined premium calculations and claims processing while allowing insurers greater flexibility in product design within the regulatory parameters.

Motor vehicle owners are advised to review their existing policies and understand the new structure ahead of the December 15 implementation date to ensure adequate coverage under the revised framework.
