Island ecosystem bounces back after feral sheep removal effort
An intensive eradication programme has demonstrated nature's capacity for rapid recovery on Socorro Island, where invasive sheep once threatened delicate forest habitats. The successful removal of over 1,700 animals has enabled vegetation to rebound dramatically.

Socorro Island's ecological restoration offers a cautionary yet hopeful case study in invasive species management. When feral sheep were introduced to the island in 1869, their population exploded to approximately 5,000 animals, causing widespread degradation of native vegetation and soil structure across the landscape.
Recognising the extent of environmental damage, conservation authorities launched an intensive eradication programme between 2009 and 2012, successfully removing 1,762 sheep from the island. The intervention proved transformative. Within years of the grazing pressure ceasing, vegetation cover on Socorro Island expanded dramatically from just 29 per cent to 85 per cent, revealing the underlying resilience of the island's ecosystems and their capacity for self-repair when given respite from destructive pressure.
The rapid recovery underscores the severity of impact that introduced herbivores can inflict on island ecosystems, while simultaneously demonstrating that ecological damage need not be permanent. However, conservation efforts on Socorro Island remain incomplete. Feral cats and other invasive species continue to pose significant threats to native wildlife, indicating that singular eradication efforts, while important, must be part of broader, sustained conservation strategies.
The Socorro Island experience carries implications for ecological management across island ecosystems in South and Southeast Asia, where invasive species similarly threaten delicate habitats and endemic species. Scientists point to the programme as evidence that well-coordinated removal efforts, though resource-intensive, can yield measurable environmental gains within relatively short timeframes.
