Influenza cases have surged across Sri Lanka in recent weeks, triggering fresh calls from the health sector for preventive measures against the contagious viral illness. Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Palitha Karunapema confirmed that surveillance networks have identified a notable uptick in cases over a three to four-week period, signalling the need for enhanced public awareness.
The spike comes as seasonal influenza patterns typically intensify during certain months in the island nation. Health officials have emphasised that members of the public should adopt standard precautions including regular hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and staying home when symptomatic to reduce transmission risks in the community.
Authorities have urged individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms—such as fever, cough, and sore throat—to seek medical attention promptly. The health sector remains vigilant in monitoring disease trends through existing surveillance frameworks to track the outbreak's trajectory and ensure appropriate public health responses are implemented swiftly.
