Island restoration project revives habitats for endangered bird species

Conservation efforts on Klein Curaçao have yielded significant results following a targeted habitat restoration programme that removed invasive goat and cat populations from the small island. The removal of these non-native species has allowed native vegetation to recover across the island's degraded landscapes, creating suitable conditions for wildlife rehabilitation.

The restoration work has directly benefited nine bird species that depend on the island's native plant communities for survival. With the invasive predators eliminated, bird populations have begun to stabilise, marking a turning point for species that faced severe population pressures from both habitat loss and predation.

The initiative demonstrates the critical link between invasive species management and ecosystem recovery in island environments. By removing goats, which had stripped vegetation through overgrazing, and feral cats, which preyed on nesting birds, conservationists created the necessary conditions for natural regeneration of the island's botanical resources.

Ecologists involved in the project highlight that invasive species removal remains one of the most effective conservation strategies for island ecosystems, which are particularly vulnerable to non-native fauna. The success on Klein Curaçao provides a model for similar restoration efforts across vulnerable island habitats in the region, where invasive species continue to threaten endemic and migratory bird populations.
