Island-wide dengue control initiative launched across seven provinces

The Ministry of Health commenced a dedicated dengue control week on September 14, mobilizing resources across 62 Medical Officer of Health areas spanning seven provinces. The initiative represents a focused effort to combat rising dengue cases during peak transmission season.
Dr Kapila Kannangara, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, is overseeing the programme, which concentrates on provinces where dengue activity remains elevated. The week-long campaign will deploy enhanced surveillance, breeding site destruction, and community awareness activities in designated high-risk zones.
The coordinated response reflects concerns about dengue transmission patterns across the island during recent months. Public health officials anticipate the concentrated effort will help reduce vector populations and interrupt disease transmission chains in vulnerable communities.
Residents in the targeted Medical Officer of Health areas are advised to cooperate with health authorities conducting inspections and vector control operations. Individuals are also urged to adopt preventive measures including eliminating stagnant water sources around homes and properties to reduce mosquito breeding habitats.
