Isolation, substance abuse preceded Uttar Pradesh man's alleged crime

Details surrounding an alleged crime in Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh district have painted a picture of increasing isolation and troubled circumstances in the years preceding the incident. The accused man, identified as Arvind Singh, stands accused of murdering two priests conducting prayers at his home and killing his wife while holding children hostage.

According to Ashutosh Singh, a childhood friend of the accused, Arvind Singh underwent a marked change in behaviour following his elder brother Sunil Singh's death in 2018. "After that incident, he began distancing himself from people and started using cannabis," Singh told investigators, describing how the man gradually withdrew from his social circles.

Family members have added further context to the psychological state of the accused in the period leading up to the alleged crime. They claim Arvind Singh had developed an aversion to religious practices and rituals. The incident occurred while a three-day recitation of the Mahamrityunjay mantra was being conducted at the residence, suggesting possible tensions within the household over religious observances.
