Israel defence minister vows to complete Gaza operation, remove Palestinians

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz declared on Monday that Israel intends to complete its military operations in Gaza and effect the removal of Palestinians from the region. Speaking on the ongoing conflict, Katz asserted that the Israeli offensive has already resulted in the displacement of approximately 70 per cent of Gaza's population since hostilities commenced in October 2023.

The statement reflects Israel's stated commitment to its military campaign in response to the cross-border attack launched by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which triggered the current conflict. Israeli officials have previously outlined their objectives in the territory, citing security concerns and the need to neutralise militant threats.

The assertion regarding population displacement raises significant humanitarian concerns, as Gaza's pre-conflict population exceeded 2.3 million residents. International organisations and humanitarian groups have documented extensive civilian displacement and casualties resulting from the military operations.

The comments from Israel's defence ministry come amid ongoing international scrutiny of the military campaign's impact on civilian populations. Various global bodies have called for humanitarian access, ceasefire negotiations, and protection of civilian infrastructure throughout the conflict.
