Israeli President Assigns Eisenkot Task to Form Government

Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday formally assigned Eisenkot, a retired general and political newcomer, with the responsibility of assembling a coalition government. Eisenkot has been given a mandate period of 28 days to negotiate and secure the support of at least 61 members of the 120-seat Knesset, the Israeli parliament.

The assignment represents a significant political development in Israel, as Herzog bypassed Netanyahu in the government formation process. Netanyahu has led Israel's government since 2009, with an interruption between 2021 and 2022, making him the country's longest-serving prime minister.

Eisenkot, who served as chief of the Israel Defense Forces from 2014 to 2019, entered politics in recent months and has positioned himself as an alternative to Netanyahu. His appointment to lead coalition negotiations signals a substantial shift in Israel's political landscape and suggests growing pressure to find a replacement for the embattled prime minister.

The 28-day window provides Eisenkot with a defined timeframe to conduct negotiations with various political parties across the parliamentary spectrum. If successful, he would become prime minister. Should he fail to secure the necessary coalition agreements within the stipulated period, the mandate would revert to the president for reassignment to another candidate.
