ISRO employee unions demand clarity on privatisation roadmap

Employee unions at the Indian Space Research Organisation have formally requested clarification from management regarding the planned privatisation of space sector activities, citing uncertainty about the agency's future operational structure.
Among the key concerns raised by staff bodies is the status of critical programmes including the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), the Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3), and the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). The unions are seeking explicit confirmation on whether design, development, realisation, integration, testing and launch operations for these vehicles will continue as core ISRO functions or be transferred to the private sector.
The clarification request comes as the government pursues broader reforms to expand private sector participation in India's space economy. Union representatives have emphasised the need for transparent communication regarding which functions will be retained in-house and which may be opened to commercial operators.
The matter reflects broader concerns within ISRO about maintaining institutional capacity and expertise while facilitating industry growth. Staff bodies have indicated they require detailed information about workforce planning, technological transfer protocols, and the long-term strategic direction of India's government-owned space agency before privatisation measures are implemented.
