ISRO launches India's first geosynchronous imaging satellite

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F17) lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh early Thursday, carrying the EOS-05 payload. The mission represents India's first attempt to place an imaging satellite in geosynchronous orbit, a capability that will enhance the nation's surveillance and monitoring capabilities.

EOS-05 is designed to provide continuous Earth observation from a fixed position above the Indian region, offering improved temporal coverage for applications ranging from disaster management to agricultural monitoring. The geosynchronous orbit, positioned at approximately 36,000 kilometres above the equator, allows the satellite to maintain a constant vantage point over the subcontinent.

The successful deployment underscores India's growing expertise in heavy-lift launch vehicle technology. The GSLV platform has been developed over years of iterative missions, with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) progressively enhancing its capabilities to handle increasingly complex payloads and orbital mechanics.

With this achievement, India joins a select group of nations capable of operating imaging satellites in geosynchronous orbit. The satellite is expected to provide critical data for government agencies, disaster response teams, and researchers across multiple sectors including forestry, water resources, and urban planning.
