ISRO launches NVS-03 satellite, restores India's NavIC to full capacity
India's space agency successfully deployed the NVS-03 navigation satellite from Sriharikota on October 30, bringing the indigenous NavIC constellation back to its full four-satellite operational configuration. The launch marks a significant milestone in India's effort to establish an independent, high-precision positioning and timing network.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another milestone in its space programme with the successful launch of the NVS-03 navigation satellite from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota on Thursday. The satellite's deployment restores the NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) system to its complete four-satellite operational status, ensuring continuous coverage across Indian territory and the surrounding region.
NavIC, India's indigenous satellite navigation system, is designed to provide accurate positioning, navigation, and timing services independently of foreign systems. The constellation's four satellites enable autonomous coverage over the Indian subcontinent and adjacent areas, reducing dependence on external navigation infrastructure. The system operates in the L5 and S bands, offering precise real-time positioning capabilities for both civilian and strategic applications.
The restoration to full operational capacity strengthens India's technological sovereignty in space-based navigation. With the NVS-03 in orbit, the NavIC system is now equipped to deliver more reliable and precise geolocation services across the region. The achievement underscores ISRO's continued commitment to developing indigenous space infrastructure and enhancing India's capabilities in satellite technology and space-time coordination.
The successful deployment follows India's broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign positioning systems while establishing itself as a regional space power. Officials noted that the constellation's full operational status will enable expanded applications in civil aviation, transportation, telecommunications, and disaster management across South and Southeast Asia.
