Istanbul experienced its worst flooding in more than eight decades as record-breaking rainfall inundated the sprawling metropolis, overwhelming drainage systems and causing significant damage to infrastructure and property. The extreme weather event unleashed torrential downpours that transformed streets into rivers, trapping residents and disrupting transportation networks across the city.

At least four people have lost their lives in the flooding, with authorities continuing rescue and recovery operations in affected neighbourhoods. Emergency services mobilised personnel and equipment to assist stranded residents, while evacuation efforts were underway in low-lying areas vulnerable to rising water levels.

The scale of precipitation witnessed during the event far exceeded normal seasonal patterns, with meteorological data indicating rainfall volumes not seen in the region for more than 80 years. The flooding has raised concerns about urban drainage capacity and climate-related weather extremes increasingly affecting major population centres in the region.

Local authorities have declared a state of emergency in affected districts, coordinating relief efforts and assessing damage to residential areas, commercial establishments, and public infrastructure. Officials urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as weather conditions gradually stabilise.
