A high-level delegation from the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has appealed to Canadian authorities to leverage diplomatic pressure on the Sri Lankan government to address long-standing accountability concerns stemming from the civil war.
Led by ITAK MP Sivagnanam Shritharan, the delegation held discussions with senior officials from Canada's Foreign Ministry in Ottawa this week. The talks centred on several contentious issues, including investigations into the Chemmani mass grave and allegations of continued military presence in civilian areas.
The meeting represents the latest effort by Tamil political representatives to internationalize demands for accountability and justice related to the final phases of Sri Lanka's 26-year conflict. The ITAK, which represents Tamil interests in the Northern Province, has consistently called for independent investigations into alleged violations of international humanitarian law.
Canada has previously expressed concern over human rights issues in Sri Lanka and has been among Western nations scrutinizing Colombo's record on transitional justice mechanisms. The bilateral discussion signals ongoing international engagement on the country's post-conflict accountability framework.
