IUML denies Kerala government sidelined UDF allies on policy matters

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Wednesday dismissed claims that the ruling UDF coalition in Kerala has marginalised its alliance partners in governance decisions. IUML leader Thangal responded to accusations by UDF ally Adoor Prakash, asserting that the coalition maintains structured consultation mechanisms.

Thangal pointed to a UDF meeting held on July 31, noting that the gathering had addressed concerns regarding political appointments and decision-making protocols within the alliance framework. He emphasised that such meetings serve as platforms to clarify outstanding issues between coalition partners.

According to IUML, the government's policy decisions are informed by regular bilateral discussions between alliance members, contradicting suggestions that any partner has been excluded from the consultative process. The party maintained that the alliance structure ensures adequate representation of all constituent members' interests in governance matters.

The exchange reflects ongoing tensions within Kerala's ruling coalition, where coordination between multiple partners has occasionally generated friction over ministerial portfolios, administrative appointments, and policy direction. The UDF, which comprises the Indian National Congress, IUML, and several regional parties, has governed Kerala through various configurations in recent decades.

With assembly elections expected in the coming years, maintaining coalition unity remains crucial for the UDF's political prospects in the state.
