J&K panel flags irregularities in flagship water mission implementation

A Jammu and Kashmir House Committee has identified significant irregularities in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), flagging concerns that the scheme has fallen short of its core objectives despite scattered successes. The Committee's findings suggest that while some regions have seen progress in the water supply initiative, the overall ambitions of the Mission remain unfulfilled across the Union Territory. National Conference legislator Hasnain Masoodi, addressing the Committee's observations, underscored the disconnect between targeted outcomes and ground-level delivery. "While some progress has been achieved in certain areas as far as implementation of JJM is concerned, yet the overall objective of the Mission has remained unachieved," Masoodi stated. The Committee has recommended a detailed investigation into the operational and administrative lapses contributing to the implementation gaps. The Jal Jeevan Mission, a centrally-sponsored scheme aimed at providing tap water connections to rural households across India, has been a key component of the government's development agenda. The Committee's intervention marks the latest in a series of assessments questioning the scheme's execution in various regions, as officials grapple with persistent challenges in service delivery and resource allocation.
