The Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) has called on authorities to verify allegations that Sri Lanka is losing more than US$50 million annually in foreign exchange through current Colombo Port charging structures before modifying existing regulations.

The apparel sector's concerns centre on the need for empirical evidence supporting the forex leakage claim, according to industry representatives. JAAF maintains that any substantial changes to port charging arrangements require thorough investigation and transparent findings to ensure informed decision-making.

The association has emphasised that exporters require cost predictability and operational certainty when conducting international trade. Changes to port tariffs directly impact export competitiveness and production planning, making advance notice and clear justification essential for the sector's stability.

The dispute highlights broader questions about port efficiency and cost structures at Sri Lanka's primary maritime gateway. Industry stakeholders are signalling their willingness to engage with authorities on port-related matters, provided claims are substantiated and implementation timelines allow for business adjustment.
