Jamia Millia Islamia has escalated its response to an ongoing student protest by issuing what it characterised as a final warning to demonstrators occupying a building housing the departments of Political Science and Economics. According to a notice circulated by the protesting students, the administration declared their presence in the facility unlawful and cited disruption to normal academic functions as grounds for the ultimatum.
In response to the occupation, the Delhi-based central university announced it would transition classes to online mode, effectively bypassing the occupied premises and allowing academic activities to continue uninterrupted. The move underscores the administration's determination to maintain educational continuity while addressing the protest.
The notice's characterisation as "final" signals the university's intent to enforce compliance with institutional rules governing campus conduct. The administration has not specified a deadline for the students to vacate the premises or detailed consequences should they remain.
The protest and institutional response reflect broader tensions on Indian university campuses regarding student grievances and administrative authority. The shift to online instruction represents a pragmatic approach by the administration, though it remains unclear how long the university intends to sustain remote classes or when resolution of the underlying dispute might occur.
