Japan backs environmental push for Kandy Perahera 2026

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has committed to supporting environmental conservation efforts for the Kandy Esala Perahera scheduled for 2026, signalling Japan's growing engagement with Sri Lanka's heritage preservation initiatives. The arrangement underscores the festival's importance as a major cultural event while reflecting broader regional commitments to sustainable practices.

The Kandy Esala Perahera, traditionally held in July or August, attracts thousands of devotees and international visitors to the Central Highlands each year. The festival's scale and congregation of participants have historically posed environmental management challenges, making the JICA partnership a strategic step towards balancing cultural celebration with ecological responsibility.
