Japan's nuclear regulatory authority has put forward a city in the Tokyo metropolitan region as a candidate location for a permanent geological repository to store high-level nuclear waste. The move represents the latest phase in Japan's long-term strategy to safely contain radioactive materials generated by its nuclear power plants.
The site selection process follows a rigorous, multi-stage framework designed to identify geologically suitable locations that meet strict safety standards. The preliminary survey phase alone extends over two years, during which authorities conduct detailed geological assessments and feasibility studies of potential sites.
Municipalities selected for preliminary assessment are eligible to receive subsidies reaching up to US$13 million to support local research and engagement during the evaluation period. These financial incentives are intended to offset costs associated with hosting surveys and to facilitate community dialogue about the project.
The full site selection process is expected to require approximately 20 years from initiation to final designation. This extended timeline reflects the complexity of identifying and validating a location capable of safely isolating radioactive waste for generations to come, in line with international standards and scientific best practices.
Japan continues to grapple with the challenge of managing its nuclear waste stockpile, particularly following the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
