The Japan Football Association confirmed that Hajime Moriyasu will conclude his tenure as national team coach by December 31, marking the end of his reign over the country's senior squad. Go Oiwa, who presently oversees Japan's U-21 programme, has been tapped as his successor to lead the team into its next competitive phase.
The coaching change represents a significant shift in Japanese football's leadership structure. Moriyasu's departure sets the stage for Oiwa to implement his vision for the national team, building on the foundation established during his time developing younger Japanese talent.
The timing of the managerial transition coincides with the postponement of the AFC Asian Cup, which was originally scheduled to take place in the coming months. The delay in the continental tournament has provided space for the transition to occur without immediate pressure on the incoming coach.
Oiwa's promotion from the youth setup to the senior role reflects the association's confidence in his coaching credentials. His experience nurturing Japan's next generation of players is expected to inform his approach to managing the national squad during a transitional period for Japanese football.
