Japan forged Olympic medals from 6.21 million recycled phones

Japan's recycling programme transformed electronic waste into Olympic glory, with the nation collecting 6.21 million used phones and other discarded electronics over a three-year period ending in 2019. The initiative reflected a commitment to sustainable practices ahead of hosting the world's largest sporting spectacle, engaging municipalities and businesses across the country in the collection effort.

Specialised recyclers extracted precious metals from the accumulated devices, recovering gold, silver, and bronze in quantities sufficient to manufacture the complete medal sets required for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The recovered metals were subsequently refined and fashioned into approximately 5,000 medals that were awarded to athletes competing in Tokyo in 2021, when the Games were held following a one-year postponement.

The project underscored Japan's technological prowess in precious metal extraction and recycling, while simultaneously addressing the growing challenge of electronic waste management. By channelling discarded consumer electronics into Olympic medals, Japan demonstrated how large-scale sporting events could catalyse innovative solutions to environmental challenges, setting a precedent for sustainability in future Olympic host nations.
