Japan funds women's livelihood centre in Mannar district

Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata signed a grant contract on October 29, 2026, formally approving financial support for the establishment of a local products manufacturing and sales centre in Mannar district. The project forms part of Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme, a dedicated funding mechanism designed to support community-level development initiatives across Asia.

The GGP scheme operates on principles of human security, emphasizing direct support for vulnerable populations and grassroots communities. The Mannar centre will focus on manufacturing and marketing locally-produced goods, creating employment and income-generating opportunities for women in the district.

The initiative reflects Japan's ongoing commitment to supporting sustainable development and economic empowerment in Sri Lanka's regions. Through the GGP framework, Japan targets vulnerable communities by funding small-scale projects that build local capacity and generate sustainable livelihoods.

Mannar district, located in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, has faced significant development challenges in recent years. The establishment of the manufacturing and sales centre is expected to contribute to economic recovery and social development in the area, while providing women with direct access to market opportunities and skills training.
