Japan pledges USD 447,432 for Sri Lankan demining operations
Japan has committed substantial financial support for mine clearance activities in Sri Lanka's conflict-affected Northern region. The grant, signed on September 29, will fund humanitarian demining work through a grassroots assistance scheme.

Japan's Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Akio Isomata, has formalized a grant agreement worth USD 447,432 (approximately Rs. 148 million) to support demining operations in the North, marking the latest instalment of Tokyo's post-conflict reconstruction assistance.
The grant contract was signed between Ambassador Isomata and Sarath Jayawardhana, Programme Manager of the Skavita Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Project (SHARP), under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP) scheme.
The funding will support the removal of mines and unexploded ordnance from areas affected by the country's three-decade conflict, addressing a critical humanitarian challenge facing Northern communities. Mine clearance remains essential to enabling full recovery and safe return of displaced populations to affected regions.
Japan has consistently supported Sri Lanka's post-conflict rehabilitation efforts through bilateral aid initiatives, with particular emphasis on mine action and civilian protection programmes.
