Japan is moving to deepen its defence and security ties with ASEAN member states, with Tokyo emphasizing the need for coordinated responses to shared challenges across the Indo-Pacific region.
Japanese Defence Minister Koizumi Shinjiro outlined an expanded cooperation framework that extends beyond traditional bilateral arrangements to include partnerships with external actors. The initiative focuses on three key technological and strategic areas: artificial intelligence applications for defence, unmanned systems development, and the safeguarding of critical undersea infrastructure that underpins regional commerce and communications.
Koizumi stressed that ASEAN nations must work together to bridge differences on various issues while building collective capacity to address transnational security concerns. The proposal reflects Japan's broader strategic pivot toward deepening security partnerships throughout Southeast Asia, a region of critical importance to Tokyo's defence posture.
The enhanced cooperation framework signals Japan's commitment to supporting ASEAN's centrality in regional security architecture while addressing emerging threats including cyber threats, maritime security challenges, and infrastructure vulnerabilities. Officials indicated the initiatives could be implemented through existing ASEAN-Japan dialogue mechanisms and new multilateral arrangements involving like-minded partners.
