Japan Railways fully restores Kyushu services after devastating earthquake

The restoration of Kyushu's rail network represents a significant milestone in the region's recovery efforts following the July earthquake. Passenger services across all affected lines have now been fully restored, allowing travellers to resume normal operations without reliance on substitute transport arrangements.

For over two months, commuters and travellers dependent on the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train line and other regional services had been forced to rely on alternative transport options. Bus services operated as substitutes along key routes, while passengers on the high-speed rail line faced extended journey times and reduced service capacity.

The completion of repairs 74 days after the initial earthquake demonstrates the scale of damage sustained by the rail infrastructure and the extensive reconstruction work required. Japan Railways coordinated a comprehensive restoration programme to assess damage, conduct necessary repairs, and bring all services back to full operational capacity.

The full restoration of rail services is expected to provide significant relief to the local economy and communities across Kyushu, restoring connectivity that is vital for regional commerce, tourism, and daily commuter networks. The resumption of normal operations marks an important step forward in the region's broader recovery from the natural disaster.
