Japan rebuffs China over protocol breach in PM address

Japan's government has formally protested China's handling of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's name in recent diplomatic communications, with officials stating that Beijing failed to accord her the appropriate honorific designation. A Chinese spokesperson had referred to the premier by name alone, without the customary title attached to her office.

The omission was characterised by Japanese authorities as disrespectful and contrary to standard diplomatic conventions that govern official exchanges between nations. Such protocols are typically observed to denote formal recognition of a counterpart's standing and position.

The protest reflects the delicate nature of Japan-China relations, which have been strained in recent months over territorial disputes, defence spending, and regional security concerns. Tokyo has increasingly emphasised the importance of maintaining proper diplomatic decorum as a foundation for constructive dialogue.

China's Foreign Ministry has not immediately responded to Japan's objections. The incident comes amid broader efforts by both countries to manage their relationship, though fundamental differences on key policy issues remain unresolved.
