Japan's spacecraft begins historic journey to Martian moon

Japan has launched an ambitious space probe aimed at exploring Phobos, one of Mars's moons, marking a significant milestone in the nation's deep-space exploration programme. The mission represents Japan's first attempt to land on and collect samples from an object beyond Earth's orbit.

Japan's spacecraft begins historic journey to Martian moon

Japan's space agency successfully dispatched its Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) probe on its multi-year voyage toward the Red Planet's interior moon, Phobos. The spacecraft will travel across millions of kilometers of space before reaching its destination, where it is expected to conduct detailed scientific observations and collect geological samples for return to Earth.

The MMX mission addresses fundamental questions about the Martian system's formation and evolution. Scientists believe that studying Phobos, which orbits closer to Mars than Earth's Moon orbits Earth, may provide crucial insights into the planet's early history and the composition of its moons.

Once in orbit around Mars, the probe will perform close-range surveys and descend to Phobos's surface to gather rock and soil samples. The collected materials will be sealed in a capsule and dispatched back to Earth, where researchers expect to analyze them within a few years of retrieval.

This ambitious undertaking underscores Japan's growing capabilities in interplanetary exploration and positions the nation alongside other space-faring powers pursuing Mars-related scientific research. The mission is scheduled to conclude with sample return in the early 2030s.
